A dog may become involved in an accident, may experience pain wear on his joints, or could suffer from weaknesses which are often associated with certain breeds.

A working dog or athletic dog may need knee surgery or ACL surgery to repair damaged ligaments. It is very easy for a dog to damage the anterior cruciate ligaments (ACL) in the knee; in fact the ACL surgery is done five times more often in dogs than it is in humans. A tear or rupture can be caused when a dog twists their leg making a quick turn while running, falling on a slippery surface or when struck by a vehicle. Overweight and obese dogs have more stress on their joints and ligaments and have an increased risk of tearing their ACL. However, some dog breeds appear to be predisposed to have increased wear on their ligaments. These breeds include Rottweilers, Bichon Frise, and Labrador Retrievers to name a few. When a rupture occurs, symptoms include lameness, swelling, and a tendency for the dog to hold the injured leg off of the ground. There are three different types of surgery available to repair a torn or ruptured ACL and are used depending on the severity of the rupture. Dr. Grewal will choose the type of ACL surgery based on your dogs specific condition and needs.
For pets with arthritis, we may use cold laser surgery to reduce stiffness and aches. In the most severe cases, we may recommend bone surgery or knee surgery to repair damage caused by the arthritis.
